When Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed me to the Senate of Canada in July 2010, I was put in the prestigious position of being the first Pakistani-Canadian Pashtun Senator. My appointment is representative of Canada's ethnic diversity and is an honour to all minorities in this country.
I thank you all for the overwhelming support that I have received from individuals and communities across the Great White North. You have spurred my ongoing dedication to human rights, women's issues, youth and the inclusion of ethnic minorities in our national fabric.
As a Canadian Senator, I am grateful to serve this country that has done so much for me and my family. I intend to serve the people of Canada with whole-heartedness and commitment both inside and outside the Red Chamber.
In addition to more information about me, you will find useful tidbits on this website about the Senate of Canada and the crucial role it plays in a democratic society. As noted by Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. MacDonald, the Senate is a place of "sober second thought" where legislation receives proper, careful consideration before becoming law.
